There was pandemonium at the complex of the Kogi State House of Assembly when hundreds of suspected political thugs stormed the premises, leading to the abrupt disruption of activities in the chamber.

Though the speaker, Imam Umar Ahmed, escaped unhurt but the member representing Igalamela/Adolu constituency, Friday Sani Makama, was not that lucky, as he received the beating of his life from the hoodlums who recorded the entire exercise.

It was gathered that being their target, the thugs stripped him, before unleashing dangerous weapons. The deputy speaker, Hassan Bewa, reportedly burst into tears at the sight of Makama’s manhandling.

However, witnesses said the majority leader, Mathew Kolawole, prevailed on the thugs who later left him almost in coma. The aides of the lawmaker were also attacked, as they equally receive beating like their principal.

It was learnt that the unknown assailants were irked to hear that Makama, who was suspended for six months, secured a consequential judgment from the court reinstating him.

People were also talking in hush tone that the invitation by the House of the Commissioners for Justice and Finance, Mohammed Ibrahim and Idris Asiwaju, to account for the two Paris-Club refunds to the state may have not gotten down well with some vested interests.

The assailants had wanted to attack a Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) cameraman for attempting to record some of their activities, just as a number of journalists were manhandled with others escaping through the perimetre fence.

The Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, later told reporters that he was at the scene of the incident to forestall the breach of law. The plenary had barely begun after a long executive session when the hoodlums disrupted the exercise by chasing people out of the chamber and gallery.

Speaker Ahmed and his security aides equally left the premises through the fence as his convoy was stuck owing to the blockade at the entrance. He, however, told reporters that he was surprised that the police could look the other away while the mayhem lasted.

However, Governor Yahaya Bello condemned the incident, describing it as rascality of the highest order. He pledged to bring the perpetrators to book.Speaking through his Director General on Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, he said his administration would not condone rascality.
