Delta insists on land regularisation, demolishes illegal structures

Delta State government has warned that it would not shift ground on terms for documents regularisation in the Core Area II, Okpanam community.

Besides, the state government said it had embarked on clearing of bushy medians and two road-sides of the Okpanam-Issele-Uku axis and demolition of 4,000 makeshifts used as criminals’ hideouts along Asaba-Benin Expressway.

The Director-General, Special Programmes to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Chief Frank Omare, said the exercise was aimed at checking the increasing crime rate in the locality as criminals hide under the cover of the over-grown weeds and makeshifts to carry out their nefarious activities.

He said: “Government’s attention was drawn to the incessant robbery attacks and other heinous crimes being committed between Okpanam Junction and Issele-Uku Junction along Asaba-Benin dual carriage road on a daily basis. It was further observed that the bushed/makeshifts in the area were also major cause of the worrisome development as the criminals use them as cover to attack unsuspecting motorists and other road-users.

Meanwhile, the state government has performed the ground breaking for a multi-million naira ultra modern mechanic village in Asaba.
Performing the ceremony, Governor Okowa assured Deltans of his commitment towards ensuring better and organised cities in the state through partnership with private investors.

“The level of work done so far, it shows commitment on the part of investors, because, we signed a memorandum of understanding few months ago, we have also, signed memorandum of understanding with the private sector for development of parks in other cities and for the development of the energy sector,” Okowa said.

Earlier, the Commissioner For Transport, Mr. Vincent Uduaghan, said the project was a public/ private partnership between the State and Rehomes Property Development Limited to boost urban renewal in the state and ensure that mechanics are concentrated at a place within the state capital.

He stated that the project would house over 900 workshops, car wash, police station, bank and other facilities that would give Asaba a befitting aesthetics where Nigerians can purchase auto parts, repair their automobiles and cater for all categories of mechanics and ancillary businesses.

“All those affected by government’s directive on the regularisation of their land documents must go to the ministry of lands and surveys to regularise their holdings.”Omare, who is also chairman, taskforce on land regularisation, said that he had no mandate to negotiate either to reduce the amount of money each person had to pay for the regularisation, or any other term inherent in the deadline issued by government.
