Delta urges contractors to comply with contract specifications

To curb delay in executing contracts by building and civil engineering firms, Delta State government has given marching order to contractors handling road projects to return to sites to avert serious sanction.

The Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, who gave the directives while inspecting on-going road projects across the state, said that the government has commenced massive execution of road and drain projects across the agrarian and riverine communities in the state, to pave the way for easy evacuation of agricultural produce to larger markets.

Chief Augoye inspected three road projects at Akwukwu-Igbo community in Oshimili North local council, Ukwu-Nzu in Aniocha North Local council, the Owa-Alohen road project and road rehabilitation project at Ute-Okpu in Ika North-East Local council.

He noted that the massive construction of roads and drainages across the agrarian and riverine communities in the state would speed up socio-economic development of the people. He added that the state will discouraged anything capable of disrupting the execution of projects as well as their specifications.

According to him, any erring contractor, who failed to comply with the state government’s directive to return to site, especially on the Okpanam road project will feel the state government’s sledgehammer.

Chief Augoye, while inspecting the three on-going projects at Akwukau-Igbo, the 1.4 km Oshimili North Local Council Road, the 1.1km Circular Road Project and the 1.1km Ugwu-Ani Road, commended the contractor for the pace of work, in line with specification.

The commissioner expressed satisfaction with the pace and standard of works on the 2.4km Ukwu-Nzu Road/Drainage System project phase 11, which started from a neighbouring Onicha-Uku community.

He, however, urged the contractor handling the Ute-Okpu rehabilitation project to comply with the contract agreement to avoid sanctions.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Delta State House of Assembly Committee on the State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA), Sherriff Obarevwori has urged the board to find a lasting solution to the perennial flooding within the capital territory.

Speaking during the agency’s 2017 budget presentation, Obarevwori commended the agency for providing high quality road network and sustained environmental cleanliness of the capital territory.

He stated that the agency has creditably discharged its daily responsibility by sweeping the roads and major streets, towards a cleaner and healthy environment.

According to him, the task of the agency is historically expedient and as such, would require improved and sustained funding to achieve the expected result.

Earlier, the Director-General of the agency, Chief Clement Ofuani, has explained that comprehensive study had been concluded on the storm water situation in the state and that with improved funding, a lasting, and solution to the menace of flooding would be embarked upon. He also urged the Assembly to speedily consider the enactment of an environmental sanitation law, to improve sanitary condition in the state for all.
