The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to fight environmental, transboundary crimes in the country.

According to them, With the MoU, Nigerian Environment will soon be witnessing the deployment of high-tech remote sensing applications to improve environmental sustainability and check the activities of criminals our domain.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Lawrence C. Anukam, Director-General of NESREA, who received the NASRDA team, commended the working relationship between the two agencies, which, he said would vastly enhance environmental protection and control.

Anukam disclosed that the use of Remote Sensing Applications would be of immense help especially in environmental Data collection and sharing, tracking of Tran boundary crimes, satellite imaging of Nigeria, as well as fight environmental crimes.

“We want to develop real time information system through the use of digitalized maps. This would enable both to zoom into any part of Nigeria to know what is going on there.”

He noted, the use of remote sensing is key especially where it has to do with satellite imaging which produces near accurate specification of data needed for development. This is would make it easier for Government to achieve on their mandate.”

To him, the level of land degradation, air, water and chemical pollutants was unacceptable and the time was right to combat the malaise and thereby achieve environmental sustainability. We will leave no stone unturned to achieve our desired objective and mandate for Nigerians to have a cleaner environment to live in.

In a remark, the Director-General of NASRDA, Professor Saidu Onaido Mohammed said he was elated working with NESREA and the MOU agreement was an opportunity to create the enabling environment for effective monitoring of environmental activities within Nigeria’s territorial waters and pollution control.

He said they were ready to cooperate with NESREA in terms of capacity building for staff to acquire the needed technological backing to protect the environment, adding, “With remote sensing and the satellite images generated we can exceed world standards.
