The Nigerian Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) plans to embark on training of communities to ensure better monitoring and sustainability of projects in their domain.

Speaking with newsmen on the development, Kogi State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, Ladi Jatto explained that the project’s target was to bringing succor to communities ravaged by erosion and land degradation in the state.

Jatto said the federal government in collaboration with the World Bank and Kogi State government had commenced action, which would address the menace of erosion threatening many communities across the state.

According to her, Kogi is amongst the seven states selected to benefit from the World Bank’s eight years Strategic Investment Loan (SIL) worth about $508.59million meant to ameliorate the effect of environmental degradation in the affected communities.

The coordinator said members of the benefiting communities are being sensitized on the essence of the project and the need to buy into it through active participation so that the project would be sustainable when executed.

She explained that the sensitisation, which they were about to embark on, is going to create awareness amongst people on the need to sustain the project.

“We need the community to be part of it to protect the project and also to let them know the reason why they should keep their environment clean, plant trees and construct houses with adequate drainage system.”

She said the project is of different stages of articulation and identification stage, preparation and studies and the implementation stage.

According to her, six erosion sites cutting across six local government areas of the state have already been identified to benefit from the project in the first instance. Sites to benefit from the intervention include; Etahi erosion site in Okene Local Government Area, Ankpa Erosion site in Ankpa, Ogane-Aji erosion site in Dekina, Ozuri erosion site in Adavi, Omigbo erosion site in Kabba Bunu and Ugwolawo erosion site in Ofu.
