Reps propose bill to regulate underground water, others

A new bill that will establish a regulatory framework for water management, especially surface water and groundwater resources are in the offing.

The bill titled ‘an act to establish a regulatory framework for the water resources sector in Nigeria, to provide for the equitable and sustainable development, management, use and conservation of Nigeria’s surface water and groundwater resources and for related matters’ is being promoted by the House of Representatives.

At the commencement of the debate on the issue, the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara urged the legislature to consider and endorse the bill for the purposes of ensuring efficient management and even distribution of water resources in the country.

Dogara consequently mandated the House Committee on Water Resources to involve stakeholders in order to collate their views that would guide the House in establishing the framework.

Introducing the executive bill to members, the House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila said the bill provides solutions to the water sector, as it provisions touched on varied uses of water, such as domestic, industrial, irrigation and other agricultural components.

On his part, Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources, Aliyu Ahman – Pategi said the framework would further help in streamlining all water needs and concerns, and emphasized that prioritisation of the needs were of utmost importance to the document.
