IF you take a look around gardens in the city green areas and the countryside, you will not only see plants that are blooming but also those maintaining their green foliage in the long dry season with cascades of flowers.

Look around the neighbourhood to see which plants are surviving through the driest weather, and take a note also of those that are thriving in the blistering heat with little or no water except the rainfall. You will be amazed at the rich green walls of trees and carpets of ground covers, not even to speak of fiery colorful blooms.

They are described as drought tolerant plants which for use of another word can be regarded as “drought busters”.
There are many beautiful trees in the Bignoniaceae family for instance, such as the flame trees and Jacarandas, flame shrubs (Caesalpina),

Acacia mimosa, plumerias, palms, banana trees. There are many shrubs with colorful foliage such as crotons, acalyphas. There are many flowering shrubs and plants: oleanders, euphorbia, hibiscus, cannas, heleconias alphinias, costuses, vincas, steltcia, allamanda, bougainulleas, cacti and succulents.
All can be used in the garden landscape and designs.
