Day Gen Theophilus Danjuma Was Honoured
FORMER Defence Minister, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), was last week honoured for his financial support to the Nigeria National Polio Plus Committee of the Rotary International. Chairman of the organization, Dr. Tunji Funsho commended the elder statesman.
At a dinner where the club recently gave Danjuma an award for his intervention in the fight against polio, Funsho, a former Rotary District governor, described him as one of the prominent Nigerians committed to the good of humanity.
At the event held at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, were Danjuma’s wife, Daisy, who was also honoured; President of the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi; elder statesman, Chief Phillip Asiodu; renowned scholar, Prof. Alaba Akinsete; and popular broadcaster, Soni Irabor, who was the anchor.
While Adelusi-Adeluyi gave an inspiring citation of the retired General, who is the founder of the Danjuma Foundation, other speakers extolled his qualities as a humanist.
Funsho said: “Gen. Danjuma made a commitment of a substantial donation to Rotary’s polio plus fund. He has since redeemed the pledge. Rotary appreciates and identifies with his standards of high ethical behaviour which is the major cornerstone of Rotary’s raison d’être.” Responding, Danjuma identified the need to fight poverty, diseases and other symptoms of under-development in Nigeria.
