IdolAS the Etisalat- sponsored Nigerian Idol Season 5 enters its Top- 12 stage, a sneak peek at the journey so far, shows that the television reality show has been absolutely thrilling and engaging.

It has also recorded two ‘firsts’, the Ibadan audition, which produced the highest golden card tickets of all the regions visited by the audition train and the birth of the CliqIdol competition, an online competition which afforded those who could not make it to the auditions, opportunity of turning their dreams into a reality from the confines of their homes by singing and uploading to www.cliqidol.com.

At the premiere of Season 5 in Oriental Hotel, Lagos, Etisalat assured all the stakeholders that it had put in place an interesting show for viewers and audience this season; from the prizes to be won to packaging and presentation, promising Nigerians an all-exciting television reality show.

With high expectations, thousands of Nigerian youths, who saw the competition as a platform to launch their musical careers, thronged the audition venues in Benin, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Ibadan and Lagos. The Port Harcourt audition featured performances from winners of the Nigerian Idol Seasons 3 and 4, Moses Obi-Adigwe and Evelyn Evelle Zibili as well as Season 3 runners-up, Eye-D and Elvis Jay to the delight of the crowd.

Auditions over, the 100 contestants who received golden tickets were camped and trained in the art of vocal artistry and stage performances before being grouped into three. The three Groups of 10 contestants for three weeks showcased their vocal artistry and stage dexterity to the delight of the Judging trio of Dede Mabiaku, Darey Art-Alade and Yinka Davies, studio and voting audiences.

Twelve contestants have emerged from the Group of 30 namely; Preye, Prime, Dolu, Brenda, Classic Tunez, Nex 2, Ayoka, Peace, Uloma as well as the three wild card show winners, Pscholes, Modele and Sther. It should be noted that, the Judges defied the tradition of selecting only three contestants from the wildcard round and put on stand-by Preye and Precious due to their impressive performances.

As the competition enters the Top-12 stage, which is the gala stage, the path is getting narrower and contestants will undergo rigorous music lesson sessions before performing at the Dream Studio. The journey, which started early this year, is definitely winding down and the Season 5 winner will emerge in June.

Commenting on the journey so far, Manager, Youth Segment, Etisalat Nigeria, Idiare Atimomo, urged audience to continue watching the show and voting for contestants with talents, based on their performances.

Atimomo said, “the show is getting better and hotter every week as it hits the final stage. From the audition down to the Top 12 stage, I have been overwhelmed with the contestants’ performances. They performed as if they are superstars already and my advice to the viewers and audience is to ensure that the best contestant is crowned Season 5 winner.’’

This season’s winner will go home with N7.5 million cash, a brand new car and a recording deal with Universal Music Company worth N7.5 million, amongst other prizes.
