Launching Lagos for the very first time next month is the Plus Size Fashion Week, a fashion runway show dedicated to plus size models and apparels from all over Africa.

According to the organisers, fashion trends have over time, alienated plus size African woman, almost to the point of stigmatising her body size when the reality is that a good number of African women happen to be plus-sized. To bridge the gap and put the real needs of the average African woman on the runway, this idea was born to bring an African fashion feel to an African audience.

Endorsed by the Fashion Designers of Nigeria (FADAN), the event is poised to celebrate the African woman’s body, whilst not excluding zero sized and other sized models and apparels as well.

At the press conference held in Lagos to announce the upcoming week, the Creative Director of PFW, Sola Oyebade, CEO Mahogany Events, revealed that apart from the fashion show proper, the event would also feature exhibitions, documentary showings and talks.

Slated to start on September 2, PFW would feature 10 home-based and 10 international designers, totally dedicated to the African Plus Sized woman.

Oyebade confirmed that they intend to make this a global event with the first part holding in Lagos next month, while subsequent editions would hold outside the shores of the country. “This is not going to be your everyday, average fashion show. We intend to show the beauty of curvy, fuller-figured women in the country, we want plus-sized women to make a profound statement with this fashion show.”

Listing several of their influencers to include Titi Osinyan, Yaw, Lolo1, Kunbi, Taje Prest and Motunrayo, Oyebade said the winner of the African Next Plus Sized Model (to be announced on that day) would be signed to an international agency amongst several other mouth-watering goodies.
