Owerri, the Imo State capital city is agog as the grand finale of the 17th edition of the Miss Niger Delta Peace Cultural pageant holds today at the Trade and Investment Centre, Port Harcourt Road.

President of Miss Niger Delta Organisation, Prince Sodin Akiagba in a statement said, since inception of the pageant in 1999, the competition has produced 15 beauty queens who have used their positions and offices to touch lives of the people positively, adding that Miss Iniobong Ikon won last year’s edition.

According to Akiagba, events lined up for the show include performances from artistes like Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa, Timaya; Season 2 Nigerian Idol winner, Mercy Chinwo, Arinze Baba, and K Mouth among other musicians and comedians within and outside the region.

He said, “20 contestants from the nine states of the region will compete for the coveted crown, Miss Niger Delta Ambassador for Peace and Development, and the winner will go home with a brand new car and other consolation prizes for the contestants.”

Akiagba explained that tourists and investors within and outside the country are expected to grace the occasion as they have always done to identify with the culture and tradition of the people of Niger Delta, which the platform has provided in fashion, music, dance and comedy and the experience of the traditional hospitality of the region. 

He noted that audition and screening, which held poolside, Las Vegas Lounge, Titanic View Hotel, World Bank Road, Owerri penultimate week witnessed large turnout of prospective contestants.

Hence, this has necessitated the city being agog as the grand final of the cultural show is holding for the first time in the state since the competition began. 

Earlier, the contestants visited some tourist attractions in the nine states — Abia, Imo, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa, which make up the region.

They were also trained on different skills on arts and crafts by Aroma World, South Africa as part of the main objective of the organizing the pageant, which is centred on building capacity in arts, promoting hard work and discipline among female youths of the region.
