Bello promises to convert Vulcan’s golf course to 18 holes

Niger State government has revealed plans to upgrade the 9-hole Vulcan Golf Club, Kontangora, to an 18-hole facility.The development came to light at the weekend when golfers thronged club for the First Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament.

Bello, who was the special guest at the maiden event, the biggest tourney to be held in the club located in his hometown, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army, particularly the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), for creating an enabling environment for the maiden event to hold.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Musa Mamman, said, “The golf course in Kontagora is a 9–hole course and that means, you must go twice to cover the required standard distance. Let me at this juncture state that I shall consult with my technical advisers on the possibility of upgrading the Vulcan’s Golf Course to an 18-hole golf course.”

He congratulated organisers of the tournament for efforts made towards hosting a successful, while expressing gratitude to the army for protecting lives and property of the people of his state.

The COAS, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, who was represented by Commander, Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine (TRADOC), Major – General M.A. Koleoso, also thanked the organisers of the tournament especially patron of the club, Major– General D.D. Ahmadu, for his efforts.

He said, “Having witnessed this occasion and seen the calibre of people that participated in this epoch–making event, I need no further briefing to confirm that indeed the civil–military relationship in Niger State is cordial. To all the golfers, your participation in this initiative demonstrates your resolve to promoting a more peaceful society, where people from different backgrounds can come together to interact.”

The COAS described golf as a game that brings people together, adding that it was a sport for all ages, as it encourages young ones to join the golf family.

In his opening remarks, captain of the club, and Chief of Staff, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Brig–Gen. B. Adonkie said, “I am delighted to have you distinguished personalities, golfers and friends from far and near. This proves the power of love in this beautiful game called golf.”
