CHIMA Chukwu, a 32-year-old player from the Benin Golf Club and youngster, Chimezie Isife from the home club, at the weekend dominated the 20th Heineken Enugu Golf Tournament, which drew participants from within and outside the coal city.

Chukwu emerged the overall winner in Category 1 with 155 gross, beating Chimezie Onyeaghala of Enugu Golf Club (156 gross) and Sunday Justine of Port Harcourt Golf Club, who made 159 gross.

Isife won in category two with 133 net against O.C John’s 140 net and Alfred Eno’s 142 net, among others.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director of the Nigeria Breweries plc,
Nicolas Vervelde, said the competition was a demonstration of the company’s commitment to sports development in the country.

Represented by the Public Affairs Manager, Mr. Patrick Ejidoh, the NBPLC’s Managing Director said the company’s commitment to sports
followed its role in the enhancement of active and healthy mind.

He revealed that the company and Enugu Sports Club have become age-long partners, assuring that the company would at all times sponsor sports tournaments as a means of empowering and developing the body.

He challenged golfers to continue to see the sport as a growing one that required the support of every Nigerian to enable it grow like
football, stressing that the company was satisfied that the competition had drawn players from across the country.

Also speaking at the event, the Enugu State government said it was pleased with the cooperation of the
NB PLC that has transformed golf in the state, noting that it has become a weekend of fun and excitement each time there was a golf championship.

The state’s Commissioner for Sports, Chuka Ndukwe, said through the company’s sponsorship of golf, “Enugu now has the best golf course in Nigeria,” adding that NBplc has proven to the sporting world that golf was no more “just an elitist sport, but rather a captivating sports that has harnessed the old and young in the rugged spirit of camaraderie.”
