Team Civil Defence yesterday in Enugu scraped through to the finals of the inaugural Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Tennis League by beating Team Ogun 4-3 on aggregate.

The star-studded Civil Defence team looked like they were running away with the tie when they took a 3-1 lead after four matches, but the less fancied Team Ogun rebounded to take the two reverse men’s singles to ensure a nervous but pulsating finish.

Joseph Imeh, the lead player for Team Ogun, sounded a loud note of warning when he easily defeated former national champion, Shehu Lawal 6-3. 6-7, 6-1 in the first match but current national champion, Clifford Enosoregbe, restored parity by defeating Monday Igbinovia 6-2, 7-6. Enosoregbe, however, sprained his ankle in the process and was ruled out for the rest of the tie.

The pair of Shehu Lawal and Abdulmumuni Babalola defeated Igbinovia and Imeh in two close straight sets (7-6, 7-5) in the men’s doubles, which gave Team Civil Defence a 2-1 lead.

The ladies singles match between national champion, Christie Agugbom, and 2013 CBN Senior Open champion, Ronke Akingbade was expected to be a long-drawn and hard fought match and it did not disappoint.

In a match that lasted almost three hours, Agugbom using a mixed grill of strokes, especially slices and moon balls, finally broke the resistance of a tiring Akingbade in the third set, winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
