Even in the midst of crisis bedeviling the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons, again proved their worth yesterday by beating the Teranga Lioness of Senegal 2-0 to book their passage to this year’s African Nations Cup holding in Cameroun. Nigeria qualified on a 3-1 goals aggregate.

Last week, the Coach Florence Omagbemi-led Falcons drew 1-1 with the Teranga Lioness at the Stade Demba Diop in Dakar in a match, which officials of the Falcons described as ‘far from normal football’ following rough play by the hosts.

Nigerian top striker, Desire Oparanozie, who plays for EN Avent de Guingamp FC in France, retuned from Dakar with a serious wound on her forehead, as a Senegalese defender hit her head with her boot’s stud.

But the Senegalese could only flow along for a few minutes in the return leg yesterday in Abuja.Soon after FIFA recognized NFF president, Amaju Pinnick and members of his board performed the pre-match handshake with players of the two teams, the Falcons swooped on the visitors in search of early goals.

Umea IK Sweden striker, Rita Chikwelu, struck in the 36th minutes after Arsenal Ladies forward, Asisat Oshoala, had missed a penalty in the 31st minutes.

Bayelsa Queens forward, Igbinovia Osarenoma, took the game beyond the visiting Senegalese with her strike in the 46th minute.
Falcons coach, Omagbemi hailed the players yesterday for their performance. She has promised to improve on the team before the commencement of the AWC in Cameroun, where Nigeria is the defending champion. This year’s AWC will hold in November.
