basketball -.draftdayTwo-time Africa Champions Cup for Women Basketball tournament winners, First Bank of Lagos, is confident of picking one of the two tickets from the Zone Three qualifying tournament slated to dunk off in Cotonou, Benin Republic from November 5 to 11.

The team has relocated to Cotonou to prepare for the qualifiers.

Speaking ahead of their group opener next week, newly appointed coach of the Elephant Girls, Peter Ahmedu, declared that the players were responding well to training.

Coach Ahmedu, who until last week was the coach of Nigerian men’s league champions, Mark Mentors of Abuja, joined First Bank following the reorganisation of the club’s coaching crew.

Ahmedu, who is not new to women basketball having worked with Dodan Amazons of Lagos, is determined to prove that his appointment is a right decision by the club management.

“Our target is to qualify from Zone Three and go on to prove a point that we are among the top clubs in Africa at the final round in Angola.

“Yes, I might feel some pressure as First Bank was two-time champion (2003 and 2009) of the Africa Champions Cup for Women, but I believe it is the same game be it men or women basketball.

“Joining First Bank basketball club after guiding Mark mentors basketball club to the Nigeria men league title last season is to experience a new challenge. I promise to justify the confidence the team management have in me.

“I am happy all the players are responding well to training as we look forward to a brilliant outing in Cotonou and later Angola,” he said

First Bank finished fourth at the final round of the 2014 edition of the championship held in Sfax, Tunisia and Coach Ahmedu has vowed that the club will surpass that feat this time.
