TYSON Fury claims he will fulfil his promise of emulating the legendary Muhammad Ali after becoming world heavyweight champion.

The Lancashire fighter convincingly outclassed Wladimir Klitschko and ended his nine-year run at the height of heavyweight boxing by winning his WBA Super, WBO and IBF belts with a unanimous decision in Dusseldorf on Saturday night.

One of Fury’s many statements in the build-up was that he would follow in Ali’s historic footsteps – and now, as the world champion, plans to do so.

“Tonight’s the start of a new era and I said I’ll be the most charismatic champion since Muhammad Ali and I’ll be that,” Fury told Sky Sports.

“Tonight’s the start of a new era and I said I’ll be the most charismatic champion since Muhammad Ali and I’ll be that.”

“It was a tough task coming here. He’s avoided me for five years. People can say what they want about me. He landed some good shots on me and not one rocked me. He was hanging on for dear life in that fight.”

Fury also credited the three ringside judges for their 115-112, 115-112, 116-111 scorecards, which gave him the world championship.

He had previously claimed that he required a knockout in order to win because the location in Germany was Klitschko’s adopted home, but that proved false.

Fury said: “I’ve got to give the judges their due. I thought I had to get a knockout but they showed me that love. He’s been a great champion, but every good dog has its day.

“I frustrated him, showboated and showed him stuff he’d never seen. Nobody comes to Germany and plays with the heavyweight champion like that. Only in America, but tonight we’re in Germany!

“My destiny has come true tonight.”
