‘Iheanacho still eligible for selection for UEFA Champions League’
Super Eagles’ Kelechi Iheanacho, who has been removed from the Manchester City ‘A’ list for the UEFA Champions League this season to make way for Yaya Toure and Gabriel Jesus, is still eligible to play for the Cityzens in the competition.
Iheanacho and injured Ilkay Gundogan were removed from Manchester City’s revised 21-man list to create room for Toure and Jesus in the knock stage of the competition.
Explaining the decision to move Iheanacho to ‘B’ list, Manchester City website said the 2013 FIUFA U-17 World Cup winner can play in the competition due to a special condition, which gives certain players the right to be fielded in matches of the league.
It said, “The Nigerian now meets the requirements to be named on UEFA’s ‘List B’, which allows clubs to register an unlimited number of players, providing they fulfill the following criteria:
Born on, or after, 1 January 1995; and Has been eligible to play for the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday.
“The likes of Tosin Adarabioyo and Angus Gunn – who have previously been named in matchday squads during this European campaign – are similarly still available for selection by virtue of being named on ‘List B’.”
Going by the criteria, Iheanacho now falls under the homegrown talent list since he has been with the club for more than two years and was born after January 1995.
Iheanacho has fallen down in the Manchester City pecking order since the arrival of Jesus during the January transfer window. He has not featured in any matchday list for three games, but Coach Pep Guardiola, who recently named Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane, as the future of the club, has assured Iheanacho that he has a future in the side.
The Manchester City submitted squad for the UEFA champions League include
Goalkeepers Claudio Bravo and Willy Caballero.
The defenders are Bacary Sagna, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Aleksandar Kolarov, Gael Clichy, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, while Fernando, Sterling, Toure, Jesus Navas, Kevin De Bruyne, Fabian Delph, Sane, David Silva and Fernandinho make up the midfielders.
The three attackers picked by Guardiola are Nolito, Sergio Aguero and Jesus.
