Nigeria’s Lucy Ejike yesterday shattered the world record in winning the gold medal of the women’s -61kg at the ongoing Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Ejike won the gold by lifting 136kg, increasing the country’s medal haul to five (three gold and two silver medals respectively). The closest to Ejike was Egypt’s Fatma
Omar, who lifted 133kg.

Omar requested for 139kg as she aimed to overhaul the lead, but Ejike topped it and asked for 142kg. The Nigerian later lifted 142 kg, which gave her not just Paralympics record, but a new world mark.

Powerlifting has produced all the five medals won so far by Team Nigeria at the ongoing Paralympics.
