Mourinho’s men were dominant throughout the game but failed to make their chances count.Zlatan Ibrahimovic could have scored two or three including a one-on-one opportunity inside the first two minutes.

Paul Pogba also had a host of chances and went close near the end when he hit the bar from an excellent Rashford cross. But Stoke’s saviour Lee Grant stayed strong throughout making a series of superb saves and was rightly awarded the man of the match.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Mourinho said: “My view is simple: the best United performance this season. “[It could have been] three or four nil at half-time, six or seven nil at full-time, but the result is 1-1.

“That’s football. The result is very undeserved. But I repeat, it was a much better performance than against Leicester.“Against Leicester, the result made a lot more than the performance and today was exactly the opposite.

“It was the best performance by far. [We had] six, seven, eight chances to win the game. Even after the 1-0, we were a United team that wanted to score more goals.”

“In the first minute, the goalkeeper made immediately an unbelievable save. He kept doing that until the end of the game. He started with an amazing save to Zlatan and he ended with an amazing save to Zlatan too.

“We hit the post with Pogba, we had face-to-face chances in both halves, had control of the game and were playing really well.“You can say what you want, but that is my opinion and a fair opinion cannot be different to mine because I try always to be honest in my analysing.”

“I think the reaction of the fans at the end of the game says everything.“They fought like they do every game. They came for a draw.“When they conceded the goal, they could not have a reaction because we were totally in control.“They were lucky, but lucky is part of football.”
