The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and in conjunction with the Nigeria Sport for All Commission, will mark the 2015 Olympic Day celebration beginning from today to Saturday.

The Olympic Day is a platform for people of all ages and all abilities to experience some of the magic of the Olympic Games in their own communities.

According to a release on the programme, this year’s Olympic Day celebration will not be restricted to jogging and aerobics, as educational programmes have been added into the celebration, while schools have been invited to take part in art competition/exhibition, Olympic Quiz Competition.

“Prizes would be awarded to winners of the competition, which educational programme is expected to hold on Thursday and tomorrow at the National Stadium.

“The art work will be exhibited on Thursday at the SWAN Secretariat, National Stadium, Surulere, while many schools have already submitted their entries. The quiz competition will take place at the same venue on Friday.”

According to the organisers, the objective of the educational programme is to create opportunity for students to meet children, young people and athletes.

They added: “The programme is also for social interaction, which will teach people about the values of excellence, friendship and respect and how they can apply this to their day to day lifestyle.

“Also in order to allow people of all age groups to participate in the celebration, the Olympic Day run has been broken into stages of 3km, 6km and 10 km to accommodate everybody. The Olympic Day event is not a competition to win prizes, but to serve as a reminder that exercise holds a lot of promise in helping mankind to stay healthy through sports as a way of life.”
