‘NRFF satisfied with growth of rugby in 2016’

The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has declared that the performance of the Nigeria’s rugby national team, the Black Stallions, at the international championships this year and the high level of marksmanship in the rugby league this season, has shown that the sport has better days ahead of it.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, NRFF Vice President, Fasimoye Olatunji, stated that the board in its objective to sustain and develop rugby at the grassroots, has succeeded in grooming and making over eight children participate in rugby this year.

He explained that the Black Stallions’ impressive performance at the Africa Rugby Sevens championship, which saw the team beating top rugby team like Morocco and also slugging out to extra time with Tunisia was a great achievement for the team in 2016.

Fasimoye, who also commended the Nigeria’s rugby players for their sterling performance in the CMB rugby league this session, urged the management of their various clubs to keep encouraging the players, saying that NRFF is still seeking for more organisations to sponsor the league and the national team.

He also disclosed that the body would source for measures to transform the Nigerian rugby national team to be a force to reckon with in Africa and the world, adding that the major objective of the team next year is to gain promotion to division 1B.

Fasimoye, however, urged stakeholders in the sport to fashion out more modalities that would assist improve the sport in Nigeria.
