Super Eagles Midfielder, John Ogu yesterday, declared that patriotism means standing with a team through thick and thin.He made this statement on his Instagram handle @ogu30, following Nigeria’s defeat by the Croats and aware of Nigerians’ disappointment, owing to the Eagles’ poor outing.

“Patriotism doesn’t lie only when we do well. It means standing with the team through thick and thin,” he wrote. He added that none of the Eagles go to play with the intention of losing any game. While appreciating the nation’s support and pleading for more acts of patriotism, he, however, promised that the team is working “hard for a better and strong outing” against Iceland on Friday.

However, Ogu’s statement has attracted various reactions. Movie practitioner and lawmaker, Desmond Elliot @desmondelliot, promised to continually support and believe in Ogu and the Super Eagles. He wrote, “I believe in you, I believe in the team. Go make us proud.”

Charles Inojie @charlesinojie, another Nigerian movie star, however, admonished the Super Eagles to “focus on the next game and avoid distractions”.Others accused the Eagles of not preparing properly for the game, as other teams have and are still doing.

In a related development, as Iceland prepares to face the Eagles in Volgograd on Friday, the country’s forward, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, a former teammate of Carl Ikeme at Wolverhampton Wanderers, yesterday posted a picture on twitter in solidarity to Ikeme, as he fights acute leukemia. In the picture, Bodvarsson, surrounded by his teammates, held up a shirt with Ikeme’s name and number one inscribed on it.Ikeme was diagnosed with acute leukemia during a pre-season routine medical check-up at his club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
