After crashing out of the 2017 CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup, fans and supporters of Rivers United have come to the conclusion that the only way the club can move forward is for Governor Nyesom Wike to reduce what has been described as ‘unwarranted clouts’ of Coach Stanley Eguma.

The ‘Pride of Rivers,’ as the Club is called, ended their campaign in the CAF Confederations Cup last weekend in Morocco, where they lost 1-2 to the host, FUS of Rabat, few days after losing 0-2 at home to visiting Club Africain of Tunisia in Port Harcourt.

Before they were ‘demoted’ to the Confederations Cup, the Garden City team were a step away from the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Champions League after defeating Sudanese outfit, Al-Merrikh 3-0 in Port Harcourt only to be blown away in the return leg, losing 4-0 in Omdurman.

Now, the club’s focus is on the domestic league, and the fans and supporters want Governor Wike to wade his big stick on Eguma, who they see as major obstacle to the team’s progress.

Some of the fans, who spoke with The Guardian yesterday shortly before Rivers United tackled MFM FC in a rearranged NPFL fixture at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, alleged that with Eguma left as chief coach of the club, no meaningful progress could be achieved.

“Eguma sees himself as a tin god in the club because of his close relationship with Governor Wike. He treats players the way he wants, and he has no respect for the management,” one of the fans said.

Another fan added: “Rivers United couldn’t have been bundled out of continental assignment this year the way it happened if coach Eguma was cordial in his relationship with players. If a player does not come through him into the club, such a player has no business staying in Rivers United. And this has scared so many good players away from the club. To me, it is time the governor waded his big stick on him.”

Efforts to speak with coach Eguma yesterday were unsuccessful.
