Former Assistant Coach of the Super Eagles, Joe Erico, yesterday declared that Nigeria’s new technical adviser, Gernot Rohr, is only in the country to try his luck with the abundant talented players that the nation is blessed with. But he admits that the German could succeed if he chose the right players for the senior national team.

Nigeria will on Saturday meet Tanzania in the last African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifier. The game is, however, inconsequential, as Egypt has already picked the sole ticket from Group B to qualify for the Gabon 2017 AFCON.

Speaking to The Guardian, Erico said Rohr as an expatriate coach should know the right thing to do to bring back the nation’s lost glory in football.“All I want Rohr to do is to try his luck and do it well; he should make sure he gets the right players to play for him and the nation. He is an expatriate, and as you know we love expatriate coaches, may be because they are better than the indigenous coaches. So he should do the magic.

“As you know, every coach knows what he needs when he wants to work. I will advise him to get the right players and the right atmosphere to work with. The welfare of the players is key, as you know, expatriates do not joke with players’ welfare. He should be ready also to work very well with the management if wants to succeed,” he said.

The former Julius Berger FC of Lagos coach refused to be drawn on the caliber of players Rohr has chosen for his first game in charge of the Super Eagles. He said: “I am just an onlooker who may not have anything to say for now since he just started. All I wish is for him to succeed.”
