St Finbarrs College, Akoka and Queens College, Yaba, on Thursday emerged champions of the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) Lagos State Masters Cup Season Six in the boys and girls’ categories played at the Onikan Stadium.

Two first half goals by the Akoka boys ensured that they triumphed over the two-time winner of the competition, Anwar-Ul-Islam College, Agege. The Agege team scored a late minute goal to reduce the tally of the epic encounter that witnessed several misses from both schools.

The match that was lighted up by display of football artistry from the young lads was, however, marred by the waterlogged field caused by drizzly rain. Earlier on, in a repeat of the 2014 finals that ended 4-3 on penalties in favour of Queens College, the Yaba girls again successfully triumphed 2-0 by defended her title won last season against the 2013 winner, Ansar-Ud-Deen Girls High School, Itire. The Yaba girls scored a goal in each half of the duel with little opposition as would have expected from the Itire girls.

For their efforts, both St Finbarrs College, Akoka and Queens College were presented with a cheque of N750,000, as the runners received N500,000 cheques also in both categories.

Commenting on this year’s finals, the Managing Director of the bank, Mr. Segun Agbaje, said: “We are proud to lead this initiative that provides an avenue for students to showcase their talents and passion for the game of football even as they remain committed to their academics.”

While adding that, “This competition paves the way for youths to cultivate their sporting talents and aptitudes, while fostering and building a healthier lifestyle at a critical stage in their lives.”

Established in 2012, the GTBank Masters Cup is a yearly football competition for first generation and private secondary schools in Lagos State geared towards the development of grassroots football, the discovery of young soccer talents, and fostering camaraderie amongst competing schools.
