Venus Williams yesterday urged sister, Serena, to win her U.S. Open match so they could meet in the third round, writes express.co.uk. Venus thoroughly impressed as she beat Camila Giorgi 6-4, 7-5 to progress to round three.

The American will face the winner of last night’s match between Serena Williams and Carina Witthoft. And Venus is hoping she can be reunited with her sister for the first time in almost two years. The last time the two siblings met, Serena was pregnant with her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian – and Venus joked that handed the 23-time Grand Slam winner the advantage.

“I pretty much have a clue [who I could play in the next round],” Venus Williams said.“The last time we played the Australian it was two against one so at least this time it will be fair. I hope that we get to play.“I’ll do everything I can to recover and play in this tournament.

“If I play Serena I will have played two US Open champions and it’s not even the semifinal yet. It’s a tough draw.”Venus saved three break points late in the second set before going on to win against Giorgi. And she credited the support of the home crowd for helping her get past a difficult opponent.

“I think I’m not the only one happy about the shade,” she added.“It has been amazing to play out here on Louis Armstrong Stadium. I am really pumped to have won against a really inspired opponent.

“I felt the energy definitely. That love-40 game at 4-4 was not looking good.“You guys really got me through that and it is exciting out here, I love it.“You have to play who you have to play.”
