One week after Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, inspected failed sections of the Apapa-Oshodi expressway, rehabilitation has commenced at Berlett Bus stop.

Ambode, who made an unscheduled inspection tour of the road, had directed the state’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to move to site immediately and fix damaged portions of the road.

On Monday, May 16, a team from construction company, Julius Berger was sighted at Berlett taking measurements of failed sections, particularly the main lane. The sight of construction workers was cheering to commuters, who have experienced intense gridlocks and chaos on the road. As at weekend, work was in full swing, with construction vehicles lifting materials to site.

Commuters are, however, urging the construction company to work only at night, when traffic is usually lighter. They said the rehabilitation, as it is currently being executed, is causing gridlock on the road.

One motorist, James Akin, said: “The company is to blame for the traffic jam because by blocking sections of the road, they have obstructed vehicles heading to Apapa or Oshodi. They ought to have known that this is a very busy road and that blocking any part of it will definitely create confusion.”

Another, Chibuzo Ogechukwu, prayed that the rehabilitation should be done very early in the morning or late at night when there would be fewer people on the road, and that if maintenance must take place during peak hours, alternative routes should be provided.
