Angered by allegations of extortion and collection of illegal levies in markets across Imo State, Governor Rochas Okorocha has set up Consumer Protection Councils.

He also announced the abolition of all forms of collection and illegal levies, raising a body of Internally Generating Revenue (IGR) team in all markets across the 27 Local Councils of the state.

Addressing representatives of the traders at the Trade and Investment Centre, Owerri, the governor said the state government would no longer sit and watch consumers and traders cheated at will.

“I announce the abolition of illegal taxes and IGR collections in the markets. Consumer Protection councils will be set up in Markets to check unwholesome food items sold to consumers.”
