To stem the crisis of oil pollution and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta, all oil spills must be cleaned up to create sustainable environment for all communities in the oil-rich region.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a two-day Oil Spill Conference organised by Kaku Professional Engineers Limited in conjunction with the Eco Restoration Foundation of Nigeria.

The conference, which also featured an art exhibition was tagged, “Oil and Gas Pipeline Vandalism and Sustainable Development in Nigeria.” It was to sensitise the public and stakeholders in the industry of the dangers posed by toxic hydrocarbon when it is spilled into the environment, discuss oil pollution issues and proffer solutions among others.

The communiqué observed that severe environmental degradation caused by massive oil pollution in the oil producing areas is partly responsible for the crisis in the Niger Delta region.

Participants urged oil companies to invest and secure their operational areas for them to continue in business and enjoy the goodwill of these communities. They also urged the Federal and state governments to dialogue with agitated groups to stop pipeline vandalisation.
