Text: Romans 8; Galatians 3:13

Key Verse: Romans 8:5, “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.” (NLT)

Living a sanitised life is living a life that is pleasing to God. It means having dominion over the deeds of the flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:13 says, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” Many of us, after we have accepted Jesus Christ into our lives, expect to live without sin and are disappointed at the result. The Bible reveals that, since the Fall of Man, every human being has been born into the world with a sinful nature (Psalms 51:5). This is how you were ‘delivered from the factory.’ Every person in the world is born sinful – hard to believe that a baby is sinful.

Man is not simply influenced by sin, but is completely overpowered by it, and no one can escape that dominance by his or her own efforts. Sin is a defiling disease that corrupts every person, degrades every individual, disquiets every soul, and steals the peace and joy from the heart. Sin places you under the power of Satan, the ruler of the present world system. Thank God for the redemption plan. God did not leave us in the dark on how we can live above sin, which is a curse of the law, but Christ Has redeemed us from it, according to Galatians 3:13. Praise the Lord!

Life in the Spirit (sanitised life) is the conquering power over the power of sin. Living a sanitised life is about ‘sanctification’, living a life ‘in Christ’ and not being ‘separated’ from God. You are not totally free from sin after the new birth experience in Christ. Paul, the apostle cried out, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this power of sin?” Wow! That was Paul himself displaying the abject frustration of having believed in Jesus Christ and having given his life to God, only to find out that he is not totally free from sin. Being ‘Born Again’ is the starting point of the Christian journey, but not the end. You need the power of the Holy Spirit to live a sanitised life and to be able to put your flesh under control. You cannot live a sanitised life by your natural power. No, your strength shall fail you. The Bible says in Romans 8, but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. Living a sanitised life can only be achieved through living a life in the Spirit.

Without the power of the Holy Spirit, you will always fail God and please the flesh. The Holy Spirit empowers you to live a life in the Spirit. Living a sanitised life is living a life free from worldly pleasures, sinful desires and partial commitment to God. You do not live according to the sinful nature, but according to the Spirit.

You cannot make yourself Holy. Any attempt to do so through your own effort results in legalism, which may give you an outward and superficial conformity to God’s righteous standards, but it won’t produce the inward transformation that true holiness requires.

In describing the progressive work of sanctification, Dr. Alan Redpath once said, “The conversion of a soul is the miracle of a moment, but the manufacture of a saint is the task of a lifetime.” Living a sanitised life is the work of the Holy Spirit. It can only be achieved through a daily walk with the Holy Spirit.

Today’s Nugget: You do not live according to the sinful nature, but according to the Spirit. Prayer: O Lord, sanitise my life and help me to submit daily to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
