The Almighty God
IT is very important for individuals to come to the knowledge of God in an intimate way because knowing Him will bring us pleasure, makes life more meaningful and interesting. God is the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe. How is He described? He is a Spirit, not flesh. Where is God? He is present everywhere at all times. When did God begin? God has been present throughout time. There has never been a time when He ceased to be. God has numerous and wonderful attributes. He is big; He is mighty; He is love. These words tell us Who God is. As we search the Bible, more of God is discovered. In the Bible, we see what God did, what He said, and how He acted. When we put these together, we have a clearer picture of Who God is.
Much of our understanding of God comes from the entire scripture. There, we read about events such as Creation, the fall, the Flood, the Tower of Babel, the Exodus, and the covenants God made with His people. There are further examples throughout the history of Israel in the Psalms and also the Prophets. By looking at how God acted in these situations and what He said, we can get a good sense of Whom God is. Nothing, however, is quite as clear as the events recorded in the Gospels, where we read about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
God is the only Supreme Being with many names such as LORD God, Most High God, Almighty God, Everlasting God, God Almighty, I Am, Jehovah, Jealous, Eternal God, God of hosts, Lord of hosts, Holy One of Israel, Mighty God, God of Heaven, Heavenly Father, King eternal, Only Potentate, Father of lights. He is a Spirit. “For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth”-John 4:24. God is One. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone”- Deut. 6:4. He is Trinitarian and omnipotent in nature. His other titles given to Him are Creator, Judge, King, Defender, Preserver and a Good Shepherd.
His natural attributes are interesting to note and know. God is incomparable, invisible, inscrutable, unchangeable, unequaled, unsearchable, infinite, eternal, Omnipotence All-powerful, Omnipresence Ever-present, Omniscience All-knowing, Foreknowledge and wise.
Morally, God is good and holy. He is impartial with the ability to be truthful, merciful, vengeful and patient. Phrase such as “face of God” were personal experience of God Jacob had with Him. Jacob named the place Peniel —”face of God”—for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared.” The sun rose as he left Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Gen. 32:30.
God’s ways and thoughts are completely opposite to ours. “My thoughts are completely different from yours,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts”- Isa. 55:8 & 9. His way is perfect, righteous, everlasting, inscrutable, just and true. God is good and His goodness is abundant, great, enduring, satisfying and universal, revealed to mankind in form of material blessings, spiritual blessings and forgiveness of sin. “Your goodness is so great! You have stored up great blessings for those who honour you. You have done so much for those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world”- Ps.31: 19.
We are to rejoice in the goodness of God, keep remembering them and be satisfied with all of His goodness.
