Why church in Nigeria needs revival, by Okoroafor
Piqued by the condition of the church in Nigeria, the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Nigeria, Dr. Chidi Okoroafor, has said the church will get better, if religious leaders are willing to obey the Master and do what He commands.
The General Superintendent, who was in Lagos recently to attend a programme organised by the Lagos branch of his church in Surulere, Lagos, said the church needs revival, which will arrest the quest for materialism, as well as stop a leader from being selfish.
He said: “But when a leader is not selfish he will pursue evangelism/missions, which is the main purpose of the church on earth. It is the greatest need of the church, because revival is multifaceted, and will affect several aspects and even go beyond the church boundaries.”
Fielding questions from newsmen on Southern Kaduna killings, the cleric called on lawmakers to rise up, discuss the issue and speak on behalf of the people. According to him, they have the power to ask the Executive arm of government certain questions.
“Persecution is as old as the church,” he said. “In fact, the church gets stronger under persecution than at any other time. If you read church history, you’ll know we’ve not seen anything in Nigeria. In those days, Christians were put in the lion’s den and other difficult conditions. To be a Christian was just for you to die, but it is not like that in Nigeria.
Do you know that the church cannot be eliminated? When people burn church building, they haven’t burnt the church. It is not a church building that makes the church, which can be anywhere — under a tree and things like that. So, the church cannot be destroyed.”
