ABSU-5-12-15-THE new Vice Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Dr. Uche Ikonne, has described the proliferation of universities in the country as healthy for the nation’s development.

Speaking at the matriculation of 6,696 new students comprising undergraduates and post graduates, Ikonne listed some of the advantages associated with the increase of universities in the country as providing for more openings for admission seekers, creating jobs, reducing the number of students seeking foreign admission, creating room to compare fees paid in Nigeria and other countries and inspire a sort of quiet competition among the universities, among others.

Ikonne who was deployed to Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, on rescue mission and returned to ABSU as VC, last December, had on assumption of duty as VC, urged the ABSU community to embrace the mandate of his administration tagged “Our Story Must Change.”

The VC has vowed to reverse the rating of ABSU, which is currently the 93rd in the country’s universities. He said his administration will open ABSU to national and international interactions with the aim of addressing global parameters for ranking of universities, which he listed as: teaching and learning environment, research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), industry (income innovation) and international outlook (staff, students and research).
