Succour has finally come the way of communities under Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in Abia State, with the commissioning of water boreholes, to end the perennial search for water from streams.

The project, courtesy of the House of Representatives member from the area, Chief Uko Nkole, included Ndiokereke Arochukwu, Ndi Oji Abam and Ekelogo Ohafia communities.

According to the representatives of the youths, Kalu Okwara, who spoke during the commissioning, the communities had for decades been trekking long distances to streams to access unsafe drinking water, “but we had no alternative. We are very happy today that this has changed, this is the first time our community is benefitting from such gesture. We thank God for using Nkole to give us close access to potable water. We assure him that we will treasure and protect it.”

The lawmaker also visited Amankwu Arochukwu to inspect a block of five classrooms being constructed at the community primary school, where he received applause by both community and the pupils for his kind gesture.

A community leader, Chief Ike Uko, while thanking the lawmaker on behalf of the school and his community, described Nkole’s gesture as their visible share of the democracy dividends “that eluded us for years and caused our children to learn under trees and in dilapidated school building.”

In his remark, the lawmaker who said the school building, which is under construction, would be ready soon, lamented the sorry plight and pains of his constituents, describing it as great challenge that must be addressed.

He decried the Federal Government’s failure to respond to their cries over the dilapidated state of Ohafia-Arochukwu road, despite that contracts were awarded for its repair by both defunct Petroleum Trust Fund under Muhammadu Buhari’s Chairmanship and subsequent ones but were not executed.
