President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the sum of ₦35,000 minimum wage for all federal civil servants.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to commence indefinite strike in public primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa over the N30,000 minimum wage and promotion arrears.

Following the recent announcement of additional N35,000 to salaries of all categories of workers, a New York- based lawyer and chartered accountant, Owolabi Salis, has urged Federal Government to make N100,000 the new minimum wage.

Senate has clarified grey areas in its recent approval of N500 billion and $800 million for the President Bola Tinubu administration. The development had left many Nigerians bewildered, fearing the new government, like its predecessor, would increase benchmark for borrowing.

The minimum wage is the lowest legally allowed income below which no worker in salaried employment should be paid. The rate varies across cities and countries. Contrastingly, it is higher in advanced countries than in developing countries because of the differences in the costs of living. For instance, with $15, one could pay for only one haircut in the United States. Converted, this same amount will buy roughly 30 haircut services in low and middle-income countries.

Minimum wage negotiations between organised labour, Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), and the Federal Government will resume in the last quarter of this year.
