To prevent capital flight and grow the local information technology sector, the Federal Government has been advised to enforce relevant laws that will empower Nigerians software experts to locally produce, rather patronising foreign-based experts.

The Chairman, Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN), Prof. Vincent Ele Asor, said this at the fourth Covenant University Conference on e-Governance.

He said: “Over 200 Nigerians registered software experts are capable of fixing the economy in all aspects of software application to banks, oil/gas and manufacturers, yet they do not patronise us. Instead they go to foreign countries to develop their software applications.”

In a related development, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) have been urged to harness value of data analytics. This advice came at the weekend in Abuja, at the Layer3 organised workshop through its new division, Blacksentry, tagged: “Using Analytics to Drive Change in the Public Sector.”

Asor added that government’s urgent intervention is necessary to put things in order for this country to move fast in ICT by patronising our local operators. “Nigerians are everywhere, all over the world developing software to develop and developing countries and they excel,” he said.

Earlier, the Chancellor of the university, Dr. David Oyedepo, who was ably represented by Prof. Bridget Sokunbi, Educational Secretary, Living Faith Church worldwide, also backed the need for pragmatic discuss on issues that will engender effective utilisation of information technology for good governance, meaningful civic engagements and citizens participation for the purpose of national development.

He added that Nigerians are capable of producing models of e-Governance such as Government to Citizen (G2C), Government to Employees (G2E), Government to Business (G2B) and Government to Government (G2G) which have tremendous achieved.

According to Oyedepo, he said Nigeria is growing gradually for the implementation of some e-Government initiatives such as e-tax, e-procurement, e-payment and e-remittance in some states of the federation (Lagos and Ogun) and quite noteworthy.

At the Layer3 workshop, which was co-sponsored by SAS Technologies, a leading firm in big data and analytics, participants were enlightened on the importance and the great potential of harnessing the value of big data existing in these agencies using analytics.

The keynote speaker at the event, the Director-General, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC),  Aliyu A. Aziz, emphasised on the need for better collaboration amongst the various agencies on data sharing which will be a means of better efficiency and cost cutting.
In his words: “Collaboration amongst MDAs is stronger now as we have seen a lot of progress in the harmonization of data in Nigeria.”

Layer3’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Oyaje Idoko, said: “Data is the new oil and it’s our hope that the government, and its agencies don’t get left behind in harnessing the huge gains that resides in this data

“Layer3, through our culture of continuous improvement and innovation, birthed Blacksentry, to journey with you as you start your analytics and big data journey. Blacksentry is a new division in Layer3 focused on Data Analytics and Cybersecurity.”
