Torilo empowers teachers on use of information technology
As part of efforts at contributing its quota to the development of education in the country, Torilo Nigeria, an Information Technology firm last week trained a cross section of teachers in Lagos on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for effective teaching.
Speaking at the training session in Lagos, Head of operations, Torilo Nigeria, Victor Kalu, said ‘We are trying to empower the teachers with world class ICT skills and mindset because we believe Nigeria’s educational sector deserves the best.
With the theme: ‘Empowering the educational sector with world class ICT’, he further stated that ‘we intend to achieve more productive teaching workforce. The quality of the educational sector is a function of the quality of teachers.
“We are trying to increase the teachers’ capacity and also make them change agents. My advice to government is partner with the right players to move the educational sector forward and this will lead to improvement in teaching. It is not as expensive as the government thinks, he said.
Similarly, Digital Service Consultant, Torilo Nigeria, Femi Ogunjimi, noted that the firm had similar training for teachers at Mushin. “Today, we are having for teachers in Ikeja zone and next week we will be training teachers in Oshodi/Isolo local government. This is the first time we are having the programme and we are looking forward to doing it annually. With ICT, you can write your lesson note and mark your register online.”Responding, a Biology teacher at Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Mrs Omotayo Fayemi, expressed appreciation to Torilo for the training. According to her, ‘there is a technology gap between the teachers and the students, thereby making the training timely. Speaking further, she said she has learnt that one could download experiments online and the students can watch, instead of scampering for materials to use.
She also urged other ICT firms to emulate the firm’s initiative.
