On August 5, 2023, Abasibiangake Essienubong launched her third book, “The Grief Manual” at the event which held at Kokopelli Gallery.
The book launch was an unforgettable time of insightful conversations and introspection, featuring an engaging spoken word performance by Enifome that left the audience spellbound. There was also a thought-provoking panel session moderated by Samuel Elensi. The distinguished panelists included Seunfunmi Joan-stephen, founder of the Patrick Stephen Purple Heart Foundation for Widows; Njideka Agbo, CEO/Founder GLANN Media Consult; Stephen Umezurike, who works with Nelson Reids, and author, Abasibiangake Essienubong.
According to Abasibiangake, most of the lessons in “The Grief Manual” are drawn from the author’s own observations and experiences. The collective insights were nothing short of transformative, as they delved into the multifaceted aspects of grief, ranging from personal experiences to cultural perceptions. Amidst the discussions, it became evident that grief illiteracy remains a sad reality in our culture. “The Grief Manual” not only highlights this crucial issue but also seeks to bridge this gap. It sheds light on issues including the pervasive silence surrounding grieving, enduring grief, openly discussing loss, and much more. As Abasibiangake Essienubong aptly puts it, “Grief is a universal language, and ‘The Grief Manual’ serves as a bridge to connect hearts and minds.”
Njideka Agbo, who also wrote the foreword, stressed that a community of people that encourages positive memories is important as it helps the grieved live for another day.
Speaking on the grief illiteracy of Nigerians, Seunfunmi Joan-stephen noted that it is important to recognise how to allow people grieve the way they want contrary to what the culture says. Adding to this, Stephen Umezurike also said that the culture of not allowing men express themselves under the guise of “ you are a man” must stop and encouraged everyone to seek therapy.
“The Grief Manual” examines the impacts of grief, how those who are grieving can steer through it, and how those who are not grieving can support their friends and loved ones. It is an excellent resource that provides clear, practical guidance on handling the delicate subject of grief. It also describes a variety of emotions that bereaved people experience, including sadness, guilt, silent bereavement, loneliness, and others.
