The Korean Culture Centre has proposed a dynamic collaboration with its Nigerian counterpart, emphasising the importance of blending cultural music influences from both nations.
This collaboration is rooted in the understanding that popular music genres, such as Afrobeat from Nigeria and K-pop from Korea, share foundational elements that can be enhanced through partnership.
According to them, despite the considerable geographical distance that separates Korea and Nigeria, both countries believe in their potential to serve as a vibrant platform for cultural exchange and cross-fertilisation.
The call was made by the director of the Korean Culture Centre in Nigeria (KCCN), Jeon Juho, at a traditional musical instruments exhibition with the theme “K-pop Meets Korean Traditional Music” held at the premises of the Korean Culture Centre Nigeria, Abuja.
He noted that the initiative aims to bring together artists, musicians, and cultural practitioners from both countries to explore their musical traditions, thereby creating new, innovative sounds that reflect a fusion of their rich cultures.
“This exhibition is more focused on the Korean traditional music and its influence with the K-pop. We are promoting Korean traditional music in Nigeria, but also we hope that there’s more opportunities that traditional Nigerian music can also be introduced to Korea. We are also really open to collaboration opportunities, for example, Afrobeat together with the Korean traditional music, which can be really interesting trials and a more dynamic sound,” he added.
