Nigerian fast rising musician, Superstar YB talks his forthcoming EP, mental health awareness campaign, being a role model in this interview.

The music industry is changing dramatically, but how have you dealt with it as an artist?
There are a lot of factors, but I believe the music industry is now more open, and no one is selecting who gets to release songs. Everyone is permitted to release music, but there is a distinction in how heavily it is promoted. You had to play your music for someone back in the day, and if they thought you were talented enough, you might get a shot. It’s really different to be able to compose, and shoot a video with your friends, upload it to YouTube, and have it seen by billions across the globe.

I also believe it’s huge that people can be whoever they want and portray themselves in whichever way they choose.

Your songs have a really personal feel to them. What gives you the confidence to be open and honest about all of your experiences?
For me, it’s critical that it feels authentic and connects with me. It all boils down to the frequency of the sound and how it affects you. That is the true core, that’s what I transmit through my sound. Listen to the song for the great frequencies, It’s a universal language that can communicate directly with your soul. Whether it’s a fast-paced party song or a slow-paced love ballad, everything sounds different when it comes from a creative source.

Your sound became more diverse over the years. Are you still discovering a lot of new sides of yourself?
I’m always seeking for new ways to improve my artistic creative process. In terms of what I write about and how I write, I go with what feels authentic. and how I’m feeling at the time.

What makes your new single “My Boo” special to you?
The emotional impact of the song is palpable. “My BOO” is a love anthem for everyone, and it tells about how true love finds us when we least expect it. It has a distinct vibe to it, and the fans and new audience alike enjoy it.

What kind of emotions or feelings will your new EP be based on?
The forthcoming EP is a combination of present and past memories inspired by occurrences in my life. On the record, it’ll be a different type of adventure. As soon as the beat hits you, you’ll want to get up and dance. The first volume of the EP will be released initially, with volume 2 following at a later date. I’ve finished recording both projects, I’m simply putting the final touches on them. The project’s is titled “Afro King.” It is banger, trust me.

As an artist, you’re not only a musician but an idol for many people. Did you ever feel that pressure?
In some ways, I suppose it’s an honour. I don’t attempt to be a role model; instead, I try to be a better version of myself on daily basis. If that helps someone see themselves in a more positive light in the word, I’m really grateful. I consider it an honour to be a map to help someone else find their way. I’m taking it seriously, but I also want to keep doing things the way I’ve been doing them. It’s also worth noting that high expectations leads to disappointment; it’s amazing to look up to others, but it’s even better to look up to GOD, for no man is flawless.

Superstar YB, tell us more about your campaign to promote positive mental health ?
So, the goal of my campaign is to promote positive mental health in Africa and around the world. We’ve reached out to thousands of people across the globe with tool kits that will aid in the promotion of positive mental health, and we intend to continue non stop. Every one of us has a role to play in promoting positive mental health. We have the power to make a difference if we use our voices to help someone find support, sharing of personal mental health stories, or advocating for mental health legislation. Just keep in mind that your voice matters, and that you should utilise it for a good cause.
