The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to review tariffs for service providers operating in airports under its management and transition to a fully automated, contactless payment system.
The plans were disclosed during a stakeholders engagement forum organised by FAAN’s Directorate of Commercial Business Development (DCBD) in Lagos on Monday.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Commercial and Business Development, Adebola Agunbiade, said the tariff review was necessary to support the agency’s operations, given that 92 per cent of its revenue is derived from aeronautical sources, while only eight per cent comes from non-aeronautical sources.
“We have to find the means to review our tariff in such a way that it is not too much on you (service providers), but it’s also helping us to pay our bills. We have done it already. We will be putting out notices on it,” Agunbiade said. “Please rest assured that we will not be getting a review on tariff that probably has been done too recently. But we are reviewing our tariff, and we will also ensure that we notify you early enough so that you as businesses can plan towards it.”
FAAN is set to introduce a new contactless “airport card” that will allow seamless payments across airport terminals by simply tapping at designated points. The goal is to shift all transactions online to streamline payment processes and enhance operational efficiency.
Agunbiade revealed that FAAN generated ₦2 billion last year from its non-core revenue sources and encouraged investors to explore these alternative streams. She also noted that lease agreements are being revised to be clearer and more manageable for business partners.
Meanwhile, FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, stated that the agency will revoke licenses of individuals posing as legitimate car hire or Bureau de Change operators to engage in touting. She emphasized efforts to clear illegally stationed tankers and unregulated roadside businesses near Lagos Airport, citing safety concerns and the need to maintain a clean airport environment.
Additionally, FAAN is modernizing its parking and tollgate systems as part of a broader automation drive aimed at boosting transparency and accountability.
