Okonjo-Iweala, Adeboye, others chart path to educational, development, others
From Mohammed Abubakar (Abuja) and Isaac Taiwo (Lagos)
FOR Africa to be reckoned with before the end of the 21st century, its governments must deploy huge resources into science and technology (S&T) as well as innovation. This was the submission of African scholars in Abuja at the weekend.
In fact, Nigeria's former Finance and Foreign Affairs Minister, now Managing Director of the World Bank Group, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, led the calls for massive investment in S&T.
On his part, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has attributed the high rate of examination malpractice in Nigeria to the emphasis placed on certificates and formal education. But while he agreed that acquiring certificates was a good thing, he insisted that people should be judged by their abilities and skills, rather than by the paper certificates they have acquired.
