PROPRIETOR and Principal of Stars International College, Ikorodu, Sola Niyi Aiyemoni, says that hooliganism is the reason many private schools do not participate in the annual Lagos State Principals' Cup soccer competition. He disclosed this to journalists during the school's 10th anniversary and prize giving ceremony, which was rounded off with an award night last weekend, where some parents were recognised for their contributions towards the success of the school.

THE organisers have confirmed that 24 schools across Lagos State would feature in the league stage of the annual Lagos Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) Principals' Cup, 12 teams each for boys and girls events. The teams, which emerged finalists from the six districts across the state, will participate in the next stage of the championship, which will commence next year. Aside the teams that made it to the knockout stage, new district champions also emerged from the zones.

A ROW over blood test has knocked off the planned Floyd Mayweather Jnr's bout with Manny Pacquiao, according to Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum. "As far as I'm concerned, the fight is off Arum said, referring to the scheduled March 13 welterweight bout. Pacquiao's people told the American's camp that the Filipino would not agree to blood-testing in the 30 days prior to the fight. The welterweight super-fight was expected to be the richest of all time.

NFF promises team list before deadline SUPER Eagles' coach, Shaibu Amodu, on Wednesday gave a hint into what his line-up against Egypt would be like when Nigeria kicks off campaign at the Angola 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, saying the bulk of the players that featured at the team's last World Cup qualifier against the Harambee Stars of Kenya would play against the Pharaohs. Amodu said he was impressed by the character he saw in the team in Nairobi hence his intention to use the bulk of the players as the fulcrum of his squad for the championship. Amodu told journalists in a parley organised by national team sponsor, Tom Tom: "The character I saw in the players in that last World Cup qualifier in Nairobi is the character to build on.

NIGERIA was among the very few countries that failed to turn in their votes for this year's FIFA World Player of the Year Awards. All member-associations that comprise FIFA are sent nomination forms for the national team coaches and captains of their teams (men and women) to vote for their top three players. For Nigeria, Super Eagles' coach, Shaibu Amodu, and his skipper, Nwankwo Kanu, alongside the Super Falcons counterparts were expected to join the rest of the world in voting for the Player of the Year.

MOST Nigerian football followers believe that the Super Eagles may not add to Nigeria's two titles at the Angola 2010 Africa Nations Cup, which begins early next month. Their scepticism is hinged on the team's unimpressive performance during the qualifiers for the Nations Cup and the 2010 World Cup, from which Nigeria only managed to scale through. While the qualifiers were still on, Amodu added to the people's pessimism on the quality of his team when he declared that the current crop of players were not good enough to lift the country to any major success. Though he added that he would do his best to bring the team up to level, the Super Eagles' performance during the qualifiers confirmed peoples' fears that something was very wrong with the team. But yesterday in Lagos, Amodu sounded unusually optimistic about Nigeria's chances at the 2010 Africa Nations Cup.

IF the Super Eagles desire to win the Angola 2010 Africa Nations Cup, they must embrace the spirit of sacrifice, the Teslim Balogun Foundation has said. In a statement in Lagos, president of the foundation, Kayode Teslim Balogun, advised that players who have been called to camp should turn up in time in accordance with the camp timetable to enable the technical crew maximise the opportunity of the preparatory period.

THE condition of Nigeria's former number one goalkeeper, Best Ogedegbe, who has been in coma at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan since last week, was described as 'worrisome' by some of his colleagues yesterday, just as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said it would do everything within its limit to save his life even if it meant taking him abroad for further treatment. But to do that, the NFF says it has to wait for recommendation from doctors at the University Teaching Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
