Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has refuted recent allegations by manufacturers in the Challawa Industrial area of Kano over poor electricity supply and high tariffs, describing the claims as “untrue and malicious.”
This follows remarks by the Secretary of the Challawa Industrial Manufacturers Association, Aliyu Mahadi, during an interview on Channels Television, where he alleged that industrial customers in the area were receiving substandard power supply despite being classified under the Band A tariff.
In a statement signed by KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, the company said feeders serving the Challawa industrial cluster—33kv Coca Cola, 11kv Ceramic, and 11kv NBC—have consistently recorded an average daily supply of 23:45 hours.
“To set the records straight, from our daily dispatch records, available hours of supply for feeders in the Challawa industrial area are on Band A, with a daily average of 23:45 hours of supply throughout the month and prior,” the statement noted.
KEDCO added that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) regularly monitors service delivery and compliance, stressing that any deviation would have triggered a reclassification in line with the service-based tariff structure.
“We urge customers to verify information and facts before drawing conclusions and making misleading statements capable of damaging its image and reputation,” it stated.
The company reiterated its commitment to supporting industrial growth in the region, noting that deliberate steps have been taken over the past year to cushion the impact of rising energy costs on small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).
“We recognise the pivotal role in our local economy, supplying manufacturers with reliable power at competitive rates significantly below market costs.
By easing their financial burden, we have created a more enabling environment to foster innovation and employment generation, while achieving our foremost vision of excellence in service delivery,” the company added.
It also pledged continued investment in network expansion and system upgrades to further improve service reliability and reduce losses.
