2027: Obi is Nigeria’s hope, says PDP chieftain

Dr. Segun Sowunmi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has publicly endorsed Labour Party’s Peter Obi for the 2027 presidential election, describing him as the most prepared candidate in a political landscape he said was dominated by unready contenders.

Sowunmi, who said this during the May Day celebration in the nation’s capital, described Obi as the “only authentic presidential candidate for 2027,” adding that all others are “fake.”

Speaking at the event held at Merit House in Maitama and organised by the Obidient Movement, Cyrus Group, and the Free Nigeria Foundation, Sowunmi said, “You know I am of the PDP, but the future of Nigeria is in Peter Obi. He is everywhere, looking for answers. The others are just waiting for what they are not prepared for.”

The event brought together civil society actors, political leaders, and artists who criticised the economic situation in the country and expressed dissatisfaction with the current direction of governance. Among the speakers was Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, who reiterated the party’s focus on labour issues and said the LP remained the only party “owned by Nigerian workers.” She outlined a five-point agenda for workers, covering living wages, housing, healthcare, and enforcement of labour laws.

“A government that doesn’t reflect its achievements in the lives of its people is not a government,” she said. “Workers cannot be the creators of wealth and live in penury.”

Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Federal Capital Territory criticised the youth for what she described as a lack of political engagement. “You are too quiet in this country. We are going down and you are letting it happen,” she said.

Poet Dike Chukwumerije also addressed the gathering, urging persistence in the quest for national renewal. “Even if it takes 80 years, it must be done. If not for us, then for our children,” he said.

The Director of the Free Nigeria Foundation, Dr. Moses Paul, warned that the 2027 elections would require vigilance. He accused political figures, including the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, of attempts to intimidate voters. “Never again,” he said. “Abuja residents know where they are and where they are going.”

Veteran gospel musician Bongos Ikwue and other labour leaders were also present at the event.

As political discussions begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, the event underscored the growing support for Obi among various groups dissatisfied with current conditions and seeking a different leadership approach.
