Dons call for application of technology in fighting insecurity

University lecturers have appealed to the Federal Government to redouble its efforts in ridding the country of insecurity.

These were the submissions of academics who presented papers at a three-day International Conference organised by the Michgray Consults, in collaboration with the TBU Global Extension, America, at the Lagos State University (LASU).

Speaking during the conference with the theme: “Insecurity and Global Stability”, the convener, Prof. Biodun Akinpelu, said the motive behind bringing technocrats and lecturers across various fields was to examine the root causes of insecurity and its collateral impact on nations, the human society and particularly, on Nigeria, as well as proffering lasting solutions to bring about peaceful co-existence, justice and sustainable security.

He noted that in the best interest of the country and its people, government must ensure that it adds new strategies to fighting insecurity.

Akinpelu said: “It is very glaring that we have refused to apply technology to fight this insecurity. The situation is really getting tensed day in, day out, as even the government can not guarantee its own safety.”

He also observed that the level of the insecurity is significantly contributing to the rate at which many Nigerians, who felt their lives are not secured in their motherland, are leaving the country.

Akinpelu, however, urged the Federal Government to address the high level of joblessness among the youths to stop them from becoming instrument in carrying out devil’s work.

“If we are creating infrastructure without job for youths, what is the future going to look like? So I think we need wisdom and hope the government would be bold enough to take action,” he said.

In his closing remarks, the Burkina Faso Ambassador to Nigeria, Pasida Gouba, commended the organisers and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), for opening up the needed discourse on insecurity and its resultant effects on the stability of the world.
