Anya seeks government support for promotion of indigenous language

Anya O Anya

Renowned scholar and president of Ndigbo Lagos Foundation, Professor Anya O Anya has advocated the need for government to formulate a policy that will encourage the use of indigenous language.

Speaking at the 2018 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) International Mother Tongue Day organised by Youth Orientation for Development (YOD Anya noted that the policy is imperative in order for local languages not to go into extinction.

Besides, Anya stated that the government through the ministry of education should identify the languages that are going into extinction and ensure that they are revived.
UNESCO had in 2012 predicted the extinction of Igbo language in 2025 following the classification of the language as one of the endangered languages in the world,

On his part, the YOD president, Ambassador Emmanuel Ejiogu said the programme is aimed at raising awareness on the need to promote the use of indigenous language through the various communication channels and media, especially among Igbo children. He added that the group is not only particular about Igbo language but also other rich languages that make up the entity called Nigeria.
