Nosakhare College of Education in Edo State on Wednesday graduated 79 students during its maiden convocation ceremony with a charge to the new graduates to become world-class educators and contribute meaningfully to the development of Nigeria’s education sector.
Speaking at the convocation ceremony held in Benin City for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions, the Provost of the college, Dr. Mercy Omobude, described the event as a major milestone in the history of the privately-owned institution. The event also featured the award of certificates and fellowship investitures.
Dr. Omobude noted that the institution, which was established by business mogul and educationist Elder Nosakhare Eghobamien, has enjoyed full accreditation since its inception. She emphasized that Nosakhare College of Education is a center of excellence in teacher education.
“Today, we celebrate the academic achievements of our students and honor exceptional individuals who exemplify the values of service, excellence, and leadership,” she said.
The provost recalled that the college received provisional approval from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) on December 12, 2019, to offer programs leading to the National Certificate in Education (NCE).
Academic activities began formally in the 2020/2021 session with 60 pioneering students, followed by 15 more in the subsequent session. Together, she said, these students helped establish a strong academic and cultural foundation for the institution.
Dr. Omobude expressed appreciation to the founder and president, Elder Nosakhare Eghobamien, for his vision, dedication, and support, noting that his leadership had been instrumental to the institution’s steady growth and success. She also praised the commitment of the college’s staff.
In his remarks, Elder Eghobamien congratulated the graduating students and urged them to be good ambassadors of the college and to contribute their quota to national development.
The convocation ceremony also featured the presentation of awards to distinguished Nigerians, including the wife of the founder and president of LAPO,
Mrs. Ngozi Elizabeth Ehigiamusoe, and Dr. Clement Alile, among others.
Delivering the convocation lecture titled “Teacher Education in a Changing World,” Dr. Hezekiah Alonge of the Department of Educational Management, University of Benin (UNIBEN), emphasized the critical role teachers play in preserving and promoting national values, especially in an era of rapid change.
The event was a celebration of progress, excellence, and a renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s teacher education system.
