Educationist seeks improved budgetary allocation to sector

Educationist, Bunmi Salami, has expressed concerns over the state of the country’s education system, and appealed to the government to increase its funding to the sector in line with global recommendations.

Salami, who stated this at the second inter-house sports competition of Epitome School, Ajao-Estate, emphasised the need for policy improvements to enhance the quality of learning.

The event, which featured a range of activities, was aimed at developing the students’ moral and social life skills.

Salami identified several areas that the government could focus on to achieve this goal, including establishing a national education database to track students’ progress, identify areas of improvement, and inform policy and decision-making.

She added that investing in teacher training and development is crucial to improving education quality, noting that infrastructural development, including modern equipment and technology provision, is imperative.

According to her, constructing a mini-standard stadium in each community could enhance physical activities in schools while calling for a review and update of the curriculum to align with global standards.

She said: “A sound and properly run education system is the only hope for the future generation. The government needs to prioritise education and make meaningful investments in the sector. By addressing these key areas, Nigeria can take significant steps towards improving the quality of education and securing a brighter future for its citizens.”

Salami also stressed the role of sports in developing resilience, perseverance, and essential life skills like goal setting, self-reflection, and self-improvement.

She emphasised the importance of parents and educators working together to equip children with necessary tools for success.

“Sports play a vital role in youth development and personal growth. By participating in inter-house sports competition regularly, youths can develop essential life skills, which will improve their physical and mental health, and build positive relationship between schools, peers and adult,” Salami added.
